Here is Fr. John Perino telling us, in his own words, about himself and his vocation...

I was fortunate to have parents who practiced their faith regularly. They encouraged me and my brothers and sister to be active in the faith. They attended Mass and saw to it that me and my brothers and sister attended church as well. We all received a Catholic upbringing.
I was interested at an early age in serving God. I suppose being an altar server helped with this. It seems that at an early age God was calling me to be a priest. I attended a high school seminary, St. John Vianny Preparatory. It was the idea of the late Cardinal Cody to provide some environment and encouragement to young people that might have a vocation to the priesthood. From there I continued my studies at St. Joseph Abbey College Seminary, a liberal arts college in Covington, LA. My major was in philosophy and my minor in psychology.
After college, while my interest was still strong the priesthood, I decided to take some time off to reflect on my future. Among the jobs I held for a short period of time included working at a residential treatment center adolescents and I worked at several banks.
Eventually I discerned that God was still calling me to the priesthood and I entered Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans and was ordained on May 12, 1979 by Archbishop Hannan.
My first assignment was at Resurrection Parish in New Orleans East and then I was asked to teach at St. John Preparatory. I was later assigned to St. Jerome in Kenner. I served as chaplain of St. Jude Hospital in Kenner. I was Parochial Vicar at St. Rita in Harahan. From there I was assigned my first Pastorate at St. Mark in Ama. In 2004 I became Pastor of Holy Family.
